The Swap
The Swap is classic storytelling with hints of film noir, directed by David Drury and starring Jemma Redgrave, Michael Maloney and Jonathan Cake. This classic story sets out with normality but with every twist and turn has a psychologically disturbing edge.
The programme was first transmitted in the UK in February 2002 and is now in development as a major motion.
Synopsis
English Jen (Redgrave) and Tom (Maloney) decide to swap their London home with an Australian family for the Christmas holidays. For Jen it is a last hope that her husband will spend some relaxing time with her and the kids, but for work obsessed Tom, the timing couldn't be worse. Meanwhile sinister events back in their London home reveal that all is not as it should be…
There's something not quite right about Charles Anderson (Cake). He has arrived in advance of his family, and seems to be dispensing - first in small ways and then more significant ones, with things in the house.
With the family oblivious and on the other side of the world it seems that Anderson is unstoppable. But the best-laid plans always go wrong and this is just the start of a thrilling and unnerving game of cat and mouse where nothing is what it seems.
What The Papers Said
"… a quality of directorial vision, gripping narratives and superb performances … a tense, gripping psychological thriller … boasting excellent performances from Jemma Redgrave, Michael Maloney and Jonathan Cake … a tightly wound, atmospheric drama brilliantly directed by David Drury, who paces it all perfectly and gives the performers plenty of space to operate in."
Kieron Corless, Time Out, 6 - 13 February 2002
"… thoroughly entertaining and gripping … it pushes all the right buttons, preying on fears that we surely all have about the sanctity and safety of our homes. The performances, particularly that of Michael Maloney as the fretful Tom, are terrific. And if The Swap doesn't turn the suave Jonathan Cake into a pin-up, then there's no justice in the world."
Alison Graham, Radio Times, 9 - 15 February 2002
"A surprisingly excellent, engaging thriller … the tension is brilliantly and subtly set up"
Lucy Etherington, Evening Standard Hot Tickets, 8 - 14 February 2002
"Don't miss The Swap - a taut two-part thriller … one of the scariest dramas you will see this year."
TV Quick 9 - 15 February 2002
Distribution
"The Swap" has been sold throughout the world by Target Distribution.
